WAMI award winner, John Bannister formed The Charisma Brothers in 2003 having performed in numerous bands in Western Australia since 1987. Known primarily as a trumpet player he was well known for his harmony and lead singing. He has travelled extensively throughout Australia performing in numerous musical outfits and has performed internationally in Indonesia, England and Paris and has busked throughout Australia and Europe.   

John has performed in numerous venues in Europe including Smolensky's on the Strand in London and Le Sherwood Piano Bar in Paris in 2003 and 2004. He performed in England in 2007 with well known English pianist Larry Berkovitz, with concerts around London including The Cramphorn Theatre in Chelmsford. He has performed on stage with a number of touring acts from Perth and elsewhere, including Painters and Dockers, Letterstick [Arnhem Land], Full Fathom Five, The Zydecats, Soukous Kembele [Senegal], The Rosemary Beads, Rob Snarski & Lindy Morrison and Snarski vs Snarski. His trumpet playing is featured on the Rhibosome CD of 2002, Shangara Jive CD of 2004, David Hyams [Knowing the Place] CD of 2005 and Flywheel [Vic] CD from 2005 performing in Melbourne and Sydney in 2006 for Flywheel's "What to look for in Summer" CD launch. And he's recorded for King Wasabi 2003, Majestic Kelp 2011, The Waltones 2014, Stargazer Jazz 2017, Matthew de la Hunty 2020, Diode 2021 and Catherine Traicos 2023.

He won 1995 WAMI award in the Jazz/Blues category with his song The Look in Your Eyes. He has maintained an interest in many different styles of music including Ambient, Indi, Punk, Jazz, Blues, Latin, African and Hawaiian, he is currently performing Swinging Jazz & Groovin Blues with varied groups of musicians THE CHARISMA BROTHERS as singer and trumpet player, drawing on these different styles performing both cover and original songs.

He is also a founding member of Klang - an Improv, Fusion, Groove band formed with collaborator and fellow Charisma Brother Xavier Douglas Smith.

The Brothers have released a number of CDs of original compositions Belleville ep 2005, Place Blanche single 2007,  John Bannister & the Charisma Brothers 2008 reissued in 2016 with remastered and new studio recordings. Also available are Live @ Gypsy Tapas House 2011  Live @ The Ellington Jazz Club Album 2013, Live ep 2014 [recorded at The Laneway Lounge & Jazz Fremantle]. Involved in the formation and the management of popular 90's Perth club and party bands Los Locos and The Hep Set, he joined Weber Bros' Circus [touring WA & NT] as trumpet player and clown - 1994-96. 

John also acted in Barron Films Fremantle based television series STREET SMARTZ. Shown Australia wide on Channel 9, his trumpet playing and original composition Petit Pont have been used to compliment the soundtrack - featured in the first 3 series filmed in 2004 - 06 John plays 'TOM THE MUSO'.

The Charisma Brotherhood current line up includes John Bannister - Trumpet/Vocals, Xavier Douglas Smith - Piano, Alex Borthwick, Alex Dew - Guitar.. And notable seasoned professionals like Kevin Sanderson - Percussion and Howard Shawcross - Bass.
